Notes on revision of the WMRS publications database. Daniel Pritchett, April, 2010 |
The journal article counts for all years are much more reliable now than ever before. I found numerous records from the early days which had been classified as journal articles but were almost certainly abstracts -- I converted these records to "conference paper." reference type. While this reduced our publication count, I also used various online searches for "white mountain research station" and added many new records so the net is now greatly increased. I used two criteria for including a record as a WMRS journal article: 1) if any of the authors gave a WMRS affiliation; or 2) if the authors acknowledged WMRS. I did not include papers which focused on broad subjects and included WMRS data (such as our weather data or air samples gathered in the Whites) along with data from many other places unless the authors specifically acknowledged WMRS. Also, I did not include papers which simply cited WMRS symposium volumes, though it was gratifying to see how often articles in the symposia volumes got cited. There is still room for improvement. For example, several USGS geologists published articles in "Open File Reports" -- I think I treated some of these as book sections and others as journal articles, because USGS has a rigorous internal review process. So I need to talk to Angela and decide the best way to treat these and be consistent. There were also questions about classifying some items which were essentially newspaper-type articles but appeared in publications by scientific organizations. And then we need to standardize and improve the keywords (John and I have discussed this). Still, the database is now gives a far better idea of the quantity and diversity of WMRS research publications than it has since I've worked here, and I don't expect future improvements to greatly affect the journal article counts. Attached is a spreadsheet with the latest publication counts. |
