Old mine sites throughout the Owens Valley were surveyed to determine their status as potential roosting sites for bats. A subset of the openings was surveyed at night to determine bat presence and species identification.
Purpose:
The purpose of this study was to locate populations of sensitive bat species, and initiate a general survey of mine sites in the Owens Valley.

Mine entrance status (open or closed) was determined by daytime visual examination. Bat presence was determined by one outflight count done at each opening, using a Peterson bat detector and Sonobat software. These techniques allow presence/absence of a large bat population to be determined with high accuracy. Species identification was done with Sonobat software.

Not all attributes were recorded at every site. Nighttime surveys are to be continued in 2002

Locations recorded are accurate to within 10 seconds. Coordinates taken from GPS units at mie openings fell within this range when compared to coordinates for the same mine opeing from digital topographic maps (Sure!Maps Raster digital topographic maps).
