- Title: Potential Bat Habitat of the Inyo National Forest
- Description:
-
- Abstract:
-
A grid coverage was constraucted indicating areas
of potential bat habitat on the Inyo National
Forest.
- Purpose:
-
The purpose of this project was to create a tool
to allow Inyo National Forest to better manage bat
populations. By creating a GIS layer of potential
bat habitat, the Forest can now determine whether
detailed bat surveys are needed when projects are
proposed in particular areas. Also, creation of
a bat habitat GIS layer allows these data to be
analyzed with relation to other data in the Inyo
National Forest GIS.

Digital elevation models were mosaiced together to
cover the entire Inyo National Forest. These were
all 10 m resolution DEMs with the exception of
those covering the Kern Plateau (the southernmost
portion of the Forest). A slope grid was derived
from the mosaiced DEM of the entire Forest. The
slope grid was classified according to whether
slopes indicated talus slope potential habitat
(33-44.9 deg.) or rock outcrop potential habitat
(45-90 deg.). The area was further stratified
into three elevation zones: < 1524 m, 1524-1981m,
and > 1981m. Presence of carbonate bedrock in the
Sierra Nevada will be a final stratification.

Each gid cell is classified by slope to fall into
one of three groups: not habitat (<33 deg.); talus
slope potential habitat (33 - 40 deg.); rock
outcrop potential habitat (> 40 deg). Grid cells
are also classified to fall into one of three
elevation zones: > 1981 m; 1524-1981 m; < 1524 m.
