Below is a list of projects for which WMRS maintains a web page. This is not a complete list of projects hosted at WMRS. For a more complete list, see the "Annual Reports" pages. Students, Investigators, looking for a project? Check out the pages below, or see the "potential projects" page. Annual Physiological Ecology meetings, held at OVL every June Barcroft Winter Operations WMRS would like to move toward keeping the Barcroft Station open year-round. The winter 2003-04 season was a test case. Although the test season was highly successful, there are many financial, logistical and safety issues to be resolved. Biology of Willow Leaf Beetles CalSpace program uses Barcroft Station for monitoring radiation Carbon allocation and residence time in Owens Valley plant communities using novel dual C isotope pulse-chase tracer methodology. (UC Irvine Department of Earth Systems Science) Clem Nelson's Trilobite collection with digital photo library Climate, Ecosystems and Resources in Eastern California (CEREC) symposium November 5-8, 2008 Cosmology Using Millimeter-wave Astronomy (UCSB Astrophysics) Cottonwood blotch-miner moth Some notes and photos of the tiny Phyllonorycter moth which attacks cottonwood foliage in Bishop and prevents the fall colors from developing. GLORIA project In 2004, WMRS and the USFS established monitoring sites in the Eastern Sierra and the White Mountains to GLORIA, a world-wide long-term observation network in alpine environments. Owens River Post-fire Succession A series of fires in the past few years have created a mosaic of successional stages in the riverine vegetation, as documented in this photo-mosaic. Owens Valley Laboratory Renovation A series of resource web pages for moving forward with renovating the OVL. Ozone Monitoring Program: Assessing the background ozone concentration for North America. Quantifying feedbacks between groundwater decline, soil erosion, and ecological change in desert vegetation. NSF-funded project here in the Owens Valley, including wind profile data. Roadside Heritage program and the Eastern Sierra Watershed Program are environmental education programs sponsored by the Eastern Sierra Institute for Collaborative Education , the National Science Foundation, WMRS and other organizations. Rockart Research and Conservation Program Saltbush leaf beetle A series of notes and photographs about an abundant but tiny Monoxia beetle that feeds on Saltbush (Atriplex lentiformis ssp. torreyi, Big Saltbush) near the OVL station. The Sierra Rotors (T-REX) Project is an NSF-funded project to study mountain-wave induced rotors in the lee of the Sierra Nevada in Owens Valley. The rotors, intense horizontal vorticies with strong turbulence, can pose severe aeronautical hazards. This project, involving aircraft and ground sampling, will use WMRS as the flight operations center in March-April 2006. WERC - Basic and Applied Research in Ecology and Management for the Sierra Nevada, Great Basin, Mojave Desert, and Western Colorado Plateau Bioregions. USGS Western Ecological Research Center - Yosemite Field Station. Scientific research and investigations will include – but, are not limited to – ecology and management of fire, climate change, plants (both invasives and natives), wildlife, and plant-animal interactions. White Mountain Energy Project This page is a clearinghouse for information about energy improvements at WMRS, specifically the Barcroft Station and Crooked Creek WMRS History This page contains historical materials about the earlier days of WMRS. WMRS weather and climate monitoring This web page describes and provides access to WMRS weather and climate monitoring projects. |
