Alpine Geomorphology and Patterned Ground Minnesota State University
geographer Forrest Wilkerson plans to return to the White Mountains this summer
to establish geomorphic monitoring plots adjacent to the GLORIA summits, and to
expand upon patterned ground measurements made in 2002. Dr. Wilkerson predicts
that the higher elevation sites should exhibit greater activity than sites lower
on the gradient. In addition, because cryoturbation processes are directly linked
to temperature, soil water and snow cover, they may respond more quickly to climate
change than vegetation cover. Dr. Wilkerson also is working in Glacier National
Park near the GLORIA summits there, and plans to make comparisons between findings
there and in the Whites.
