tribute to Clem Nelson
Long time WMRS affiliate Clemens Nelson passed away, in Bishop, on March 3, 2004 at the age of 85. As Professor Emeritus with U.C.L.A. Department of Earth and Space Sciences, Clem was a world authority on Late Precambrian and Early Cambrian geology, particularly fossils from early-middle Cambrian time. A memorial service for family and friends was held here at the station on Sunday, March 28 at 11 am.
If you'd like to donate something in Clem's memory, the "C.A. Nelson, W.M.R.S. fund for student research in the early Earth's history of the White/Inyo Range" has been established in Clem’s honor. To contribute to the fund (see the Disclosures Page for UC gift policies), please send checks payable to the "UCSD Foundation, In Memory of Clem Nelson." If you wish you may write "WMRS fund for student research" at the bottom of the check. Donations are tax deductable and should be mailed to: White Mountain Research Station, 3000 E, Line St. Bishop CA 93514. Phone 858-822-0165 if you have questions. As of July, 2004, WMRS is still accepting donations.
On Saturday, March 27th, Art Sylvester led a half day field trip to the Devil's gate and Tollhouse Canyon area of the White/Inyo Mountains to view and discuss the exquisite folds there.
