The sno-cat gets loaded up the afternoon before
the run, by the shop at OVL. |
On this trip, we unloaded the sno-cat at Juniper
day use area a few miles north of Westgard Pass. Snow patches on the
paved road kept us from driving in further. |

When conditions allow, the driver ploughs the snow
in front of the sno-cat while driving along. This breakes up the crust
of the snow and keeps the snowcat down toward the base. |
When crossing Campito meadow you can often see the
wild mustang, nicknamed "Campito" by the staff. |

Much of the road was snowy even when the surrounding
land was mostly blown clear of snow. The road berms act as drift catchers. |
Here we crossed the sidehill cut near sheep pass.
There was a hard crust which we could not easily plough through, so
we drove on top of the snow at a slant. This is usually the part of
the trip where detouring around the cut makes sense. |
