Photos of Sno-Cat run, November 20-21, 2003

The sno-cat gets loaded up the afternoon before the run, by the shop at OVL.
On this trip, we unloaded the sno-cat at Juniper day use area a few miles north of Westgard Pass. Snow patches on the paved road kept us from driving in further.
When conditions allow, the driver ploughs the snow in front of the sno-cat while driving along. This breakes up the crust of the snow and keeps the snowcat down toward the base.
When crossing Campito meadow you can often see the wild mustang, nicknamed "Campito" by the staff.
Much of the road was snowy even when the surrounding land was mostly blown clear of snow. The road berms act as drift catchers.
Here we crossed the sidehill cut near sheep pass. There was a hard crust which we could not easily plough through, so we drove on top of the snow at a slant. This is usually the part of the trip where detouring around the cut makes sense.

Another "blowing snow" photo.
