The University of California White Mountain Research Station is a seeking a motivated, energetic employee for the 2008 summer/fall season. The station is headquartered in scenic Bishop, California right beneath California’s highest peaks. The upper field stations are located high in the White Mountains, which include some of the most extensive alpine habitat in the 48 states as well as the ancient bristlecone pine forest and the world’s oldest known trees. At the Bishop headquarters we are looking for a full-time Senior Cook who will be responsible for breakfast and dinners for 2-50 people, working a split shift, 5 days on, 2 days off. This position involves interaction with visiting scientists and groups of students who come and go at the field station during the season. The work load ranges from heavy to very light depending on the schedule of visitors and their specific needs. After work there is ample opportunity for hiking, climbing and exploring in the Eastern Sierra region.

Under direct supervision of the Station Manager you will plan meals/perform food prep, serve food buffet style, maintain equipment/sanitation procedures, and supervise student cleanup crews. Groups range from 5 to 50 users, with an average of 15 per night. Must be extremely prompt & reliable, experienced in standardized recipes/ production sheets & skilled in high quality, volume food production. Understanding of food specification including meat buyer's guide. USDA produce, poultry and frozen spec.'s as well as weights and measures to accurately account for and inventory. Skills in and knowledge of institutional food production essential. Must be good at solving problems such as staff shortages, changes in scheduling, and be able to prioritize workload to meet daily schedule and deadlines. Catering/restaurant and/or field station experience preferred. Must have, or obtain, (at employer expense) food-handler training certificate. Expected to maintain WMRS’ reputation for outstanding food service.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: Excellent driving record and valid California Driver's License. The University of California will conduct background checks with DMV.
