The University of California White Mountain Research Station is seeking a motivated, energetic employee for the 2008 summer/fall season. The station is headquartered in scenic Bishop, California right beneath California’s highest peaks. The upper field stations are located high in the White Mountains, which include extensive alpine habitat as well as the ancient bristlecone pine forest and the world’s oldest known trees. Physical fitness is essential as the employee must sleep and actively work at extremely high elevation. Under the direct supervision of the Station Manager, employee performs semi-skilled and unskilled building maintenance tasks including basic carpentry, painting and plumbing tasks using appropriate tools/equipment. Includes cleaning/preparing sleeping accommodations and other user-related tasks sometimes this means cooking for 3-20 people at the station. Also includes care of animals for experimental use, including preparing/distributing food and water, exercising animals, cleaning animal lodging facilities, and maintaining animals' medical health records. Living on site is required, and room & board are supplied while in residence at station.
Other qualifications: Maintenance experience and skilled/safe use of power and hand tools and custodial equipment. Ability to read instructions and problem solve building maintenance issues. Basic computer skills (i.e. typing, e-mail, word processing, etc.). Ability to work and handle animals in a laboratory environment. Preferred experience in a field station environment or with veterinary, hospital, kennel, animal handling or animal research laboratories. May involve a shift of 8 10-hour days with 6 days off on a two week rotation; employee may stay at Barcroft during days off, subject to station rules of behavior.
SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
Excellent driving record (skilled to operate vehicles on steep mountain terrain),
and valid California Driver's License. WMRS will conduct background check from
DMV. Must be physically fit enough to live and work at extremely high altitude
(12,500’ above sea level). Flexibility, creativity and good communication
skills required. Hiring Salary Range: $13.46-14.32 per hr. Filing Deadline:
