Adopt-A-Log CampaignLog Cabins in Downtown Los Angeles? An Ideal Recycling Project Back in 1989, just blocks from the Library Towers, the Bonaventure Hotel, and other
huge skyscrapers in the middle of downtown Los Angeles, on the same property as the
twenty-two story UNOCAL headquarters, and only one block from the Harbor Freeway---were a
pair of handsome, two-story cedar log cabins. The cabins once were home to several small
business: a Photo Shop, a Ticketron outlet, a restaurant (the "Grandburger"), a
bar ("The Starlight Room"), a small school, and a security business. But it was
discovered that these two beautiful log buildings were scheduled to be demolished and
discarded. White Mountain Research Station had been searching for ways to upgrade its
Crooked Creek facilities, 10,000 feet high in the White-Inyo Mountains. The station
discovered the fate of these structures, and its crew came to Los Angeles, disassembled
the buildings on site, log by log, and took them back to Bishop. The buildings have been
reassembled at Crooked Creek and have given the Station 6,000 square feet of usable space:
a kitchen/dining/library building, research housing/office space, and a shop/utility
building. The recycled buildings will be joined by covered wooden walkways to a remodeled
laboratory building and six new modular cabins that house 8 to 16 persons each. The
recycled logs of the new cabins are up for adoption to help support finishing and
furnishing of Crooked Creek and the other needs of the Station.
The Perfect Gift for Those Who (Think They) Have Everything their very own, ten-inch-diameter, top quality, milled log from the log structures at Crooked Creek. Adopt a Crooked Creek log and name it after someone or something special. Short logs, from the sides of the buildings, are $100 each; longer logs from the fonts and backs of the buildings, $200 each. Each adopted log will bear a brass plaque with the inscription of the donors choice ( up to 30 characters), and the names of all donors will be inscribed on a large donor plaque. Contributions to the University are tax deductible. Please read the Disclosure Statement, print and fill out the Adoption Form and return it with your check (made payable to the University of California Regents) to: White Mountain Research Station Please feel free to call us, if you have any questions regarding the Adopt-A-Log
