Notice to Station users: major budget cuts have caused changes in 2012 operations. We have now determined that the Owens Valley Laboratories will be closed to overnight visitor groups during the winter and spring months (January through early May, 2012), and that there is a high probability of partial OVL closure during the remainder of 2012. Therefore, until further notice, applications for use of the OVL faciities in late-May to December 2012 should be considered as pending, even if you have already received email or other confirmation from our office. Please note that operations at Crooked Creek and Barcroft should remain open, although possibly with a slightly shortened season. We are working hard to resolve these uncertainties and meet the needs of our user community (12/06/11), and are terribly sorry for disrupting your valuable research and educational programs.

General Information

Although the WMRS mission is to support research and teaching in the region, there are limitations on how the station may be used. Applicants should carefully review WMRS rules&regulations, and advisory notices before deciding to apply. Research applicants should also note the WMRS data sharing policy, which requires researchers to register information about their project, and lab users should review the lab safety pages. These, as well as application forms and travel directions, are available on-line at the WMRS applications web site (click on "reserve information" ) or you may request a copy by mail. If you cannot use the on-line applications web site above, you may also contact the WMRS scheduling coordinator (telephone: 760-873-4344 or mail to: WMRS scheduling coordinator, 3000 E. Line St., Bishop CA 93514) for further instructions.

Please note that WMRS accomodations include single bunk beds only, and that pillows and linens are provided. No blankets are provided (most people bring sleeping bags). Guests are responsible for dorm and bathroom cleaning, and are required to clean up at the end of each visit. Dining room users are required to keep the kitchen and dining area clean, as well. Note that all meals served at WMRS have a vegetarian option.

Submit your application
After reviewing the materials we recommend that you call the scheduling coordinator at 760-873-4344 to discuss the proposed details of your visit. This will ensure that space and facilities are available.
It is important to realize that each visit must be arranged in advance with the WMRS staff - only in this way can we prevent disturbance to on-going projects. After discussing the details of your visit with WMRS staff, we ask that you submit an application form on-line at the WMRS applications web site. After submitting the application form, download the waiver form, the emergency instruction sheet, and other informational materials that you might need. Note that the waiver forms must be filled out for each member of your group upon your arrival at the station, and that minors under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature. This will complete the documentation necessary for your visit.

Approval of Applications
WMRS staff will then review the application forms and other information. If everything is in order and there are no conflicts, your application will then be approved. Approved applications are displayed in the reservations calendar (click on "calendar"). If you think your application should have been approved (give us at least two weeks to process applications) and it does not appear in the calendar, please contact our office. Please note that researchers are responsible for all necessary permits needed to carry out your work, and applications will not be approved until these are obtained (see research permit page for more information).
The permitting process can take 6 months or more, so please plan ahead!

Before your visit
W
e also ask that you call the station a few days in advance of your visit to reconfirm times, dates, and numbers in your group. If you have not done so already, please also review the station rules and regulations . These policies have been developed so that we can best carry out our mission of supporting research and instruction.

If our facilities are full or we otherwise do not meet your needs, you might try the Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory, located near Mammoth, CA.
